State Requirements

Now that you are ready to open your home for daycare you will have a final inspection of your home from a Community Care Licensed personnel. He or she will go over the entire home and yard to check for all the safety requirements and or if there is any defieciency. If your home passes the guidelines , you will be issued your license of operation from the State. It is really a wonderful feeling knowing your are in compliance and have met all their expectations. From this point on there will be occassional unnanounced visits by the state licensing agency. Again each state might have a different policy on how often this will occur. I want to explain here to all providers to remember that this agency and the providers are to work as a team. You are both in the business of being responsible for the care and welfare of all the children.

Just a thought here, sometimes I had a representative come to the door with a very negative attitude. It almost seemed like they wanted to find a problem or cause some distress. In all my years doing business I only had a couple of very rude disrespectful inspectors, but I did not let their bad behavior go unchecked. I told their supervisors of their attitude and I was told very apologetically that is not how they are to behave. We providers are owed courtesy and respect when they enter our homes. So, this is just a word to the wise, never accept bad or rude behavior from an inspector if you do, you can call their office and report it to their superiors. There job is to make sure we are in compliance of the states laws and regulations and that is all. It is all about teamwork.

Before you start into the daycare business you must check with your local Community care Licensing Agency. Every provider will have to adhere to specific regulations in starting their own home daycare. Another source of valuable information is your local Resource and Referral Agencies. They will have dates for upcoming provider meetings and for CPR training and other meetings regarding new legislation. This agency also registers your daycare with their network in helping place families in your daycare. It is a great resource for all providers. As your daycare changes you call them and update your information. Here is a link to each State's policies and guidelines.
