Hi - Thank you for providing this site. I have diffinitly been considering staring a daycare. I wasn't sure if a home daycare vs. leasing or renting a space but I think that starting with a home daycare may be the safest way.
I'm currenntly working FT but with all the layoffs going around, I started looking into DayCare Business.... I'm just not sure how much money I will need to have saved up to invest in my daycare. How much will a license be? What are the required courses to take? Will I need to hire an assistant? How many kids can I have in my home? Where can I get funds for a playground, toys, crafts and mats? I've also considered renting a home instead of using my personal space since my home isn't big... Will this be allowed?

I have been looking for someone I ask these questions to so that I can pursue this career.... I am so glad that I came across this site - Thank YOu

All your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Patricia,
Well, first of all if you want to run a Licensed Family Home Daycare, then it should be in your home. However, if you want to rent a building or other facility that is up to you too. Whatever your State Regulations are will dictate how that sets up. I preferred my home for my business as it was more personal to me and my own children were young and I was able to be home with them too.
If you want to be Licensed for more than 8-10 children, I do believe you need an assistant, at least the Providers did in CA. I was Licensed for 6, and it worked out beautifully for me and my family. Except for State regulations, I do believe Licensing guidelines are pretty much the same from state to state. For instance with gun safety, pool safety, animals, and types of toys around daycare children. In my new book coming out I tell new providers where and how to locate toys and equipment. Keep it simple, fun and creative. Honestly, ask neighbors and family members for toys and books they are no longer using. Go to thrift stores and yard sales too. It's a great business, and you can regulate your fees and your hours too. Be loving, honest and respectful to yourself and expect the same from your daycare parents too. The best of luck to you! Keep me posted, I would love to hear how everything turns out! Laurie
